Tutorial, Hot potatoes (J Masher) 

Hot potatoes is the application which can help someone to create some exercises. There are six kinds of exercises in this application. But, here I would like to give the simple tutorial of how to make J Masher in hot potatoes.

If we want to create some exercises using J masher, we have to already make some exercises in hot potatoes application, because the design of J masher is the combination from some exercises model in hot potatoes.  Such as: J cloze. J Match, J Quiz, J Cross, J Mix

-          The first step to create j masher, you need to click j masher icon

-          After that click add file, and you can add the file of exercises in hot potatoes 

-          If you did  not have any file of some exercises in hot potatoes, here I give the tutorial how to make it one by one 

*        J cloze: or we can say as filling gap, here we give the sentence and we can delete one of a word in that sentence. 

-          First, click j cloze icon 

-          Then you can add the title exercises in the title box after 

-          After that you can add some sentence below, then select a delete gap, and choose what word that you want to delete 

-          Then save the file 

*       J Match: here we can give illustrations and sentences randomly. The students have to match between illustrations and sentences which have the relation. In the left (ordered) items I give some illustrations , and for right (jumbled) items, I add sentences randomly or jumbled 

-     First, click j match icon 

 

-          Then in the left ordered items, you can add the illustration or picture or anything which you want to add, then in the right jumbled items you need to add words or sentences which have the correlation with left ordered items but in jumbled

-          Then save the file 

*          J quiz: 

  

J Quiz has 4 types of exercises. Multiple Choice, Multi Select, Hybird, and Short Answer.

-          Multiple Choices: in the question box I add the question which we want to give and for the answer we can create a multiple answers and there must be only one question which becomes the right answer. And I have to give a mark in a right answer from that multiple choices.

Ø  You can add the title in the, title box above

Ø  Then create the question in the question box

Ø  After that you can add multiple answer (4 or more)

Ø  You have to give a mark in the correct answer

Ø  Then save your file 

-         Multi Select: in the question box I design or give 4 different sentences. Then for the answer box, there are multiple answers. From those different sentences in the question box the students has to choose what the sentences which become the right answer and match with the answer box 
-    Short answer: In the question box, I design the question by giving a sentence but in random words, the students have to put the words in a good order for make a right sentence. They can choose one right answer between 4 multiple answers.  
-          Hybrid: here I give a reading text and delete some words in that reading text. The students have to choose the right answer which appropriate with the text. The students can choose one of the best answer from multiple answers. 
·         J cross: this is just like TTS or we can say teka teki silang in Indonesian Language. So there are some clues which can help the students to answer the tts.  
-          First, click j cross icon

             

-          You can add some words, and design just like a tts in Indonesia

-          You can add the title in the title box

-          Then for the clues, you just need to click add clues, and give the clues in every words which you add

-          Finish, and you can save your file 

     

·         J mix: here I just give a sentence, but it will automatically become a sentence in jumbled word when the students do this exercise. And what the students need to do just make the   jumbled words becomes a good sentence.

            -     First, click j mix icon 

-          You can add the title in the title box

-          Then create the sentence in order in the main sentence box

-          If you need to give alternative sentences you can put it at alternative sentences box

-          Then, click the option below as you want

-          Finish, and you can save your file, and the system will automatically make the main   sentence which you make becomes jumbled sentences, and the students have to arrange it becomes good sentence in order 

Most of the exercises in hot potatoes which I made is appropriate with the theme. The theme is about congratulation include the expression of giving congratulation or the respond of it. This exercise is for senior high school students.
